León IV intentó emular a su padre en todo. Continuó la vigorosa política de éste contra los árabes y los búlgaros, y también siguió adelante con la iconoclastia. Sin embargo, en esto retrocedió un tanto con respecto a1 extremismo de Constantino, y adoptó una actitud de tolerancia limitada. Probablemente se debió a que su mujer, Irene, era una firme aunque secreta iconodula, e intrigaba con éxito a favor de sus ideas (el resultado de ello fue que la hicieron santa los eclesiásticos orientales posteriores, y todavía se la considera así, aunque en otras cuestiones que no tenían que ver con su iconodulismo tenía muy poco de santidad).
